Just curious as to why you singled out “southerners” when the same poll says that 40% of all people between 18 and 29 didn’t know.

Shameful as that it.

Why, the US gained it’s independence from the Confederacy, didn’t you know that?

Seriously though, the more disturbing numbers on that chart are these:

Less than $50k household income - 63%
Non-white - 56%
Women - 67%

It is troubling to see that, as it reinforces the idea that we’re doing a pretty poor job educating minorities (who correlate well as those with lower income).

As for the poor showing of women overall I don’t know what to think.

who is to say the vast majority of that demographic who answered the question wrong don’t live in the south?

It also says 26 percent of the entire country didn’t know this, but you just wanted to cherry pick the information that fed your story. Have you ever been to the South?

If you’re going to call people idiots, you might want to brush up on your grammar first.

Down dinged for misleading title.

the reason why it’s 26 percent of the nation is because the south is dragging the rest of us down

if you take grammar that seriously in a setting as informal as the internet, then you are a moron.

re: #8 SpaceJesus

You are correct. I’m obviously a moron for caring about spelling and grammar. You still didn’t answer my question about living in the South. You paint this area with a broad brush as if we all are one in the same. I’ve lived all over this country. Racism and ignorance exist everywhere.
Also, if you are going to make a post in which you ridicule people for their ignorance, then your spelling and grammar are fair game. When you call someone stupid, you’re essentially calling them lazy. I don’t disagree. Not capitalizing your sentences is also lazy.

re: #9 tnguitarist

sure, you can find racists everywhere. however, the south has a much higher percentage of them as evidenced by polling and who they elect.

oh, would you mind explaining to me again why i should use formal grammar in an informal setting such as an internet message board? i didn’t catch it. notice however, that i did use proper capitalization up above when directly discussing the articles. i leave it up to you to decide why i use formal grammar when discussing a published article, but use very informal grammar when “chatting” in the informal comments section below.

(hint: it has to do with formal versus informal contexts)
