Islamism is quite frankly, political Islam. There is no separation of church and state and the state is governed by a 7th century Salafist interpretation of Islam.

Sayyid Qutb is considered the father of the Islamist political movement. Other major Islamists include Hassan al-Bana, Ayman Al-Zawahari, and Western academia’s favorite Islamist, Tariq Ramadan.

Islamism is belief in the domination of Islam over other religions and cultures. It centers around the establishment of a world wide caliphate.

That is the general definition. However, political Islam need not have world wide ambition. It can merely center on the establishment of a theocracy within a given nation - as in the case with the Chechens.
