Reality has no purchase among the atavists.

That is marvelously eloquent and sadly, all too true.

I was going to add this to your "what you can do to help fight AGW" page, but since it's on the brink of scrolling off the "Recent Pages" list, I thought I'd put it here instead:

Advocate for companies to offer their workers more work-from-home/telecommuting opportunities. There are heaps of jobs (not necessarily pure IT) that can be performed with little more than a computer and a highspeed Internet connection. Why force these people to contribute to a toxic brew of traffic gridlock, smog production, and AGW? Not having to deal with stressful commutes on a daily basis would free their minds and time for more productive things (that *gasp* could wind up growing their employer's profits!) Occasional meetings or videoconferencing could also suffice for the times when email/IM isn't the best feedback mechanism.

I wonder if there are any official research studies into the environmental benefits of commute-reduction strategies like the above...

You've beat me to a few things yourself.

Have the deniers stopped asking where al gore is? Their attention spans are too predictably short.

Ludwig, i was hoping to get some background info about the positions with the extreme weather last winter, but am surprised to see the link to "weather" and "winter" in your comment take me to advertisements that have nothing to do with the subject. (I now see a mouseover displays something similar). Is that something you control or is it this site's software selecting random words to turn into links?

the 12-month running mean global temperature in the GISS analysis has reached a new record in 2010…. GISS analysis yields 2005 as the warmest calendar year, while
the HadCRUT analysis has 1998 as the warmest year. The main factor is our inclusion of estimated temperature change for the Arctic region.
- James Hansen

So including made up temperatures is now science. TSK TSK.

That's an LGF thing, not Ludwig...

New analysis released today has shown the global temperature rise calculated by the Met Office’s HadCRUT record is at the lower end of likely warming.

Do you agree with including made up temperatures from the Artic? As according to Mr. Hansen is what caused the (main factor) for these hottest claims.

Estimates are not "made up"... If you can't recognize the difference between NASA estimates and pulling something out of your ass, I don't think I'll be able to explain it to you...

re: #11 ShaunP

Since they use a 1200 km smoothing model, the idea that temperatures go up as you go north in the Artic 1200 km is made up. It like saying the temperature Kansas Ciy, KS is the same as Grand Forks ND. Can it be sometimes yes is it always no and it should not be modeled that way.

They don't need to make it up or estimate when the DMI is available. And it has been below normal for almost the entire melt season. So Mr. Hansen is just making it up.

It is the software turning certain words into links. I have no control over that.

The extreme weather last winter - and actually this summer is caused by the fact that the oceans and lakes are warmer. The warmer water is, the more water vapor you have. There are still fronts of cold air on the planet of course, and when the cold hits that water vapor, or even just as the water vapor rises and cools, you get more precipitation.

An extra degree or two may not seem like much, bu when you are dealing with volumes of water the size of the great lakes or the oceans, that extra degree makes for vast amounts more vapor.

re: #7 mkelly

No one is making up any temperatures MKelly. Rather than editing and cherry picking through quotes, why not look at the actual data and methodology. All of these things are published. If you took the time to look into such things you would understand how those averages are made - and that everyone publishes everything they do.

Would you care to look at the actual data for once?

Just try it.

This is utter bullshit MKelly. How about you back that up with a link? Then how about you explain what you think the words in it mean to you?
