The comments differ greatly from what Rauf said in December 2001. Just two months after the 9/11 attacks, the imam wasn't so quick to condemn radical religious beliefs in his own faith.

"The United States' policies were an accessory to the crime that happened, because we have been an accessory to a lot of innocent lives dying in the world," he said during an interview on CBS's "60 Minutes. "In fact, in the most direct sense, Osama bin Laden is made in the USA."

Kinda' remimds me of what Hamza Yusuf, the founder of Zaytuna College (America's first Muslim college) had to say about 9-11.

To prove Yusuf’s bona fides as a moderate and a patriot, MacNeil notes that he was one of the Muslim clerics invited to the White House after 9/11. But he leaves out the fact that just two days before the attacks, the same imam suggested in a speech to Muslims that America deserved severe punishment.

“This country is facing a terrible fate,” Yusuf said in California on Sept. 9, 2001. “The reason for that is that this country stands condemned like Europe stood condemned because of what it did. And lest people forget that Europe suffered two world wars after conquering the Muslim lands, Europe’s countries were devastated, they were completely destroyed. Their young people killed.”

There are also others that made less inflammatory statements regarding the reasons that 9/11 happened (similar to Imam Rauf). I think the problem is that people are falsely asserting some support for terrorists in the Imam's statements, but these are not seen to have any malicious intent:

Glenn Beck:

When people said they hate us, well, did we deserve 9-11? No. But were we minding our business? No. Were we in bed with dictators and abandoned our values and principles? Yes. That causes problems.

Ron Paul:

Have you ever read about the reasons they attacked us? They attack us because we've been over there. We've been bombing Iraq for 10 years...

Thomas H. Kean and Lee H. Hamilton, former chairman and vice chairman of the 9/11 Commission:

We face a rising tide of radicalization and rage in the Muslim world -- a trend to which our own actions have contributed.

Graham E. Fuller, former vice chairman of the National Intelligence Council at the CIA:

And what do they perceive? U.S. support for almost any ruler willing to protect U.S. interests -- routinely identified in Washington as oil and Israel.... They see U.S. military forces in the Gulf as being there to protect ruling families and not populations -- the essence of Osama bin Laden's charge.

Thanks, Shaun! Especially for those last two; I wanted to use them, but work pulled me away and I didn't have time to dig them out of my bookmarks.
