U.S. Funding of Embryonic Stem Cell Research Halted - BusinessWeek
Aug. 23 (Bloomberg) — U.S. funding of embryonic stem cell research was halted by a federal judge who ruled that the work violates a law passed to bar the destruction of human embryos.
U.S. District Judge Royce Lamberth in Washington today issued an order barring the U.S. Health & Human Services Department and the National Institutes for Health from conducting the studies. The judge cited the 1996 Dickey Wicker Amendment, which has been carried forward with in each annual HHS appropriations bill since its creation.
Whoops. Granted, Congress can simply decline to carry forward the DW Amendment in the next appropriations bill, but I had completely forgotten about it. Apparently, so did Obama’s team!
