Activists, GOP leaders sue to keep Tea Party off ballot | freep.com | Detroit Free Press
A group of tea party activists and Republican legislative candidates filed suit Tuesday seeking to keep candidates from what they claim is a phony Tea Party from appearing on the Michigan ballot in November.
The court action came a day after a state elections panel deadlocked over certifying the new party’s candidates for the ballot, but before its backers could file a lawsuit of their own.
Tuesday’s complaint, filed with the Michigan Court of Appeals, seeks to bar candidates in the purported Tea Party over a variety of alleged violations of state elections law. Mark Steffek, a retired UAW worker from the Saginaw area, formed the new Tea Party.
