UNIFIL Finds Israel Didn’t Enter Lebanon In August 3 Border Incident
This is a switch. UNIFIL found that the Israeli military didn’t enter Lebanese territory when it engaged in a maintenance operation along the border fence to clear trees snagged on its fence. Lebanese forces opened fire on the Israeli unit, killing an Israeli commander and Israel retaliated.
UNIFIL said Wednesday that the findings of the investigation confirmed the peace keeping forces’ preliminary conclusion that the Israeli forces did not cross the Blue Line international border as the Lebanese had claimed to justify their decision to open fire at Harari and soldiers from his battalion. The incident took place August third as Harari’s unit was working to cut down a tree on the the northern side of the border fence, but still within Israeli sovereign territory.
The fence does not run parallel to the Blue Line international border. UNIFIL stated that both the IDF and the LAF fully cooperated with the investigation, and that it sent the report with the findings to the UN headquarters on Tuesday.
