Even fewer Muslims than that are overtly identifiable as Muslim, since US Muslims dress like the rest of us. That makes visible targets of hate not only far fewer than other groups, but also harder to identify...

Quoted for truth. It's odd how many people seem to think that Muslims are identifiable by appearance or name alone.

If someone spoke to me on the phone and knew my real name, they'd never in a million years think I was Muslim. If I took off my headscarf there would be absolutely no way to peg me as a Muslim.

I've experienced numerous nasty encounters with bigots (usually men). They never fail to be completely taken aback when I turn around and snarl right back at them in in my obviously native English.

IMO, it's quite telling that the perpetrators of the verbal attacks are so often men and their target a lone Muslim woman who they have apparently mistaken for a foreigner. I mean, how cowardly is that?

I never reported any of the dozens of incidents that happened to me, so I'm sure there are thousands upon thousands of similar ones that likewise never get reported.

Holy shit. Forgive the crudeness, but that's where I go when I read stuff like this.

Heh, no need to apologize—I turn into quite the potty-mouth myself when a hater gets in my face. But you don't report stuff like that, y'know? Someone making nasty comments because you're Muslim doesn't qualify as a hate crime, but it's definitely a sign of Islamophobia.

I can only recall about 4 such instances since I move to the East Coast 12 years ago, but it happened pretty regularly back in Texas. That's one of the main reasons I left—I was sick & tired of it and had grown a fairly large chip on my shoulder, which was something that I knew would only lead to worse (and potentially dangerous) situations.
