Students Pray in Mosque, School Goes Crazy
Leave it to Fox News to give us the creepy spin.
A Massachusetts middle school field trip to a local mosque has sparked controversy after a video surfaced showing some students
participating in a Muslim prayer service during the visit.
Several parents complained to the school after the video, shot by a parent during the May 27 trip, was made public Wednesday. It shows a five sixth-grade boys kneeling, bowing their heads, and engaging in a prayer ritual at Islamic Society of Boston Community Center, the Boston Globe reported.
“It was not the intent for students to be able to participate in any of the religious practices,” Wong told the Boston Globe. “The fact that any students were allowed to do so in this case was an error.”
Bilal Kaleem, president of the Muslim American Society of Boston, which runs the center, said all the prayer was voluntary.
“Certainly in our tours we do not invite kids to take part, but if someone wants to come pray and take part, we shouldn’t prevent them,” Kaleem told the Globe. “It’s more an issue with the school.”
One small problem: the original Boston Globe article suggests that the outrage came less from concerned parents and more from a single parent and the special interest group she sent the video footage to, Americans for Peace and Tolerance, which has been attacking the Roxbury mosque since its opening in 2004.
A follow-up by The Boston Globe suggests that parents of the students who went to the mosque didn’t share in the media uproar. One parent derided the controversy as “ridiculous.”
Other tours the class participated in included a trip to a gospel music performance, a synagogue, and a meeting with Hindu representatives, none of which raised a peep. It comes as no surprise the sort of comments Fox News received:
Some these parents should have a little 2 x 4 chat with the school administrator. Perhaps that would be a educational experience! There is no reason to bring decent Christian children into a den of filth and animals!
