‘I read the Constitution today…’ (A poem)
At the urging of a friend of mine, I sat, although belated,
and read through that great document on which this nation was created.
So that afternoon I went out back and carefully took the time,
to read our constitution and absorb it line by line.
I’ve seen them on the news these days, this new Tea Party thing,
the folks who always say this mighty document is a king.
But as I try to reconcile this with the papers in my hand,
I must confess there are some things I just don’t understand.
This document says not a thing of religion based attacks,
nor treating someone badly because they’re Mexican or black.
There’s not a single statement here that says whites should have it better,
and believe me I have carefully checked through every single letter.
Nor can I find a sentence or stray grammatical device,
that suggests we should all go to church and worship Jesus Christ.
This document gives us liberty to decide our own direction,
the power to walk the path we choose and hold fair and just elections.
It speaks of a great nation, from the mountains to the plains,
where all men, women and families are treated just the same.
That’s a place where I want to be, where forever freedom rings,
and we adults can be mature enough to look past petty things.
This is a truly a great bluebrint for a nation proud and strong.
so I can’t help but shed a tear as I wonder what went wrong…
