Thanks so much.

I think that book reviews are an excellent idea.

Like I said, in the other thread, if you give me some details of what you might be interested in, as far as science goes, I will be more than happy to (and able to) give you many recommendations.

Also, since you’ve started it - you go first with recommending a book :)

Drat, I knew somebody was gonna say that! ;o)

Now that you mention it, just last week I downloaded the kindle version of Destiny Disrupted: A History of the World Through Islamic Eyes. I’m hoping that between that and Jewish Literacy, I can get a decent handle on some of the stuff going on in the Middle East.

The “Jewish Literacy” book is ginormous though—like 800 pages, so that one’s going to take a while to digest. I read around 500 words per minute, but finding the time to sit down and concentrate when I’m not exhausted from being at the computer all day is the hard part. I haven’t even started The Guide of the Perplexed yet. And there’s this book about WWII, my Islamic books, my purely-for-fun fiction books… *sigh*

Sooo, whatever I manage to finish first is what you guys will get a review on.

Telushkin’s Jewish Literacy is a great primer from a certain American Conservative movement (as in the Jewish religious movement that is actually quite liberal and has nothing to do with the types of conservatives we normally talk about here) point of view. That is to say he is very liberal in his interpretations of certain things.

The confusion that the name might generate is an historical accident. First there was observant and non observant only. The the observant became orthodox in distinction to the Reform movement, who considered themselves observant in the sense of active, if not interested in any of the ritual or traditional law.

Between those polls another set cropped p in America who did not want to throw out everything that the reform had, but still wanted a more assimilated American movement. These are the conservatives.

None the less, his book is full of very good information, is very readable and is very well written.

Ohh and Rambam’s Guide for the Perplexed, is essential reading for anyone interested in very deep philosophy.
