I’ve said this before, but for America to accept a religion into the culture, you have to work for it. A little persuasiveness helps, food helps more, music helps even more, and humor helps the most.

I might add that stories help too. For the Jews, we brought stories to America—the film industry. And maybe two films from this entire studio system were about Jews. Even the Diary of Anne Frank was written by Frances Goodrich and Albert Hackett—writers of the Thin Man, so I’m not counting that one.

I wasn’t aware of some of the history in the article. It was a real eye-opener.

You’re dealing with a constant—the initial bigotry and idiocy. But it is overcome every time.

Look at the history of Henry Ford and his newspaper—I forget the name—but even a big racist anti-Semite bastard like Ford was turned back with his tail between his legs.

Look at Lindbergh, a national hero, whose image is forever tarnished, and tarnished even more after Tarantino’s latest movie.

What was the end of Father Coughlin? I actually don’t know the answer to this. He just faded away, it seemed like. Most folks don’t even know who he was.

The Pammys of the world will get their moment in the spotlight—it seems like they have to. But history has a big broom, and it gets time and a half for overtime.

And all you have to do is make it more fun to live in America.

Too bad the people that really need to read this, won’t.

Or they’ll read it and disregard it or call it fiction. I generally avoid reading comments for online articles, but the ones at Smithsonian magazine are usually pretty decent. Not so much this time though—the religious right was all over it.
