Chile’s Humanitarian Triumph
Heroism: Chile’s miraculous rescue of 33 men trapped a half mile underground for 69 days not only inspires. It serves as a model for all nations facing similar challenges — including ours.
The world stood riveted Wednesday morning as rescuers pulled Chile’s miners, one by one, from what otherwise would have been a rocky grave in the harsh Atacama Desert.
Their survival was miracle enough. When first found alive in August, after a mine shaft collapsed and trapped them, they had endured for two weeks on two days of food. But the rescue that followed over two months was worthy of the selfless courage the miners showed from the start.
The leadership of Chile President Sebastian Pinera, believing fiercely in globalization and free markets, and not believing in limits, seemed to make a critical difference.
