Amen to that. After the election frenzy I really want to start focusing on education issues. There is a Second Coming, and it's not about civil rights. The nearest segregation academy is 800 yds from my house.

The far-right in this country have long targeted teachers' unions as the enemy, the embodiment of evil.

There is no doubt that "charter" schools have some strengths, but part of me believes that the driving force behind the far-right for more charter schools is the same as with home-schooling - to find a way to counter modernism.

Personally, I've had two friends who have gone to charter schools and gone on to succeed pretty well. One of them actually happens to have gone to a school founded by a conservative intellectual (which I'm 100% sure wasn't in her mind when she did so). I'm not sure what all that means, but it makes me a lot more confident in charter schools than in the experimental or magnet schools founded in big cities for years.
