Well I guess when some at FNC *cough*Hannity*cough* no longer find it convenient to their narrative to rip off LGF news stories without credit, they have to turn to other internet sources to do so.

Further down the drain they go. From ripping off a credible site like this one, to plucking bogus headlines from conspiracy theory websites.

It's like they're mentally disturbed.

Its worse, it's a self reinforcing hypnosis. Those who get their views form accepted sources are "in" and all others are enemies and only the "pure" thought of the group are ever entertained.

Since the main lines of propaganda are controlled from the top, there is little room for dissension and since the followers want to believe because they are so scared and angry though they are not sure at what exactly, they never have too many internal variations on "doctrine."

It is a ready made cult looking for the charismatic leader to truly galvanize them. When that happens, we have an American Hitler.

I was thinking of Goebbels while I was watching this. Clearly the lies are promoted for propaganda purposes. These lies and distortions make up the propaganda of the new-right. While Fox News was seen as the central clearing house for this propaganda it has been expanded on the internet in what they are now calling New Media.

In many ways we are looking at cult behavior. In order to fit in or remain in the group, many of the people on the right are now almost forced to accept the propaganda even if they know deep down inside that this may not be true. They are almost being held hostage within an ideology and experiencing something akin to the Stockholm Syndrome. Of course they do not realize that they are being held hostage by this highly dysfunctional movement at first.

I will disagree with Rachel, quite pointedly on one assumption of her's:

That these so called "truths" are "undebunkable". It is my opinion that she does a more than manageable job of debunking them.

True, but they are undebunkable within the echo chamber. No-one who watches Fox News and listens to Rush would turn on MSNBC to watch Maddow, and if they did they would instantly reject anything she said as the lies of an Obot bent on the destruction of America.

9 Lidane  Tue, Nov 9, 2010 5:47:37am

I'm glad Rachel is out there exposing this to the world. Sadly, the people who need to see it the most would dismiss her as an Obama-bot or a lesbian vampire before she ever got started, and they'd just ignore what she has to say.

10 Joanne (JustJay)  Tue, Nov 9, 2010 6:50:20am

Who know Maddow was a vampire? Wow!

The term I use for this problem is Information Disease. Note: Link isn't work safe. Although the essay is non-fiction the site is an erotic literature site. Or tries to be. Sturgeon's Law holds sway there.

Which ironically is the whole point.

Thanks for the link. She is obviously right about the media bubble chamber, but I have to wonder how long this has been going on. I probably did not become very politically aware until about 15 years ago and I noticed this behavior back then.

The only substantial difference between then and now is the amount/level of crazy theories (I distinctly remember the theory of Clinton's 'alleged' homicidal spree to squash Whitewater). Back then it was one or two crazy theories over a presidential term. Now it is one or two a month.

The combination of Fox, the radio pundits and most importantly the net is what did it. Some years ago, people got most of their news from the television. Now most get their news from the net. So if you have 50 people writing whatever on the net that become popular enough, they can all reference each other and create a bubble. The fans who get all of their news from there will never hear anything else.

Of course, it is much more than 50 people and the sites are not always run by just average folks. There are many with very firm agendas who exploit this.

Fox acts as a central clearing house so that selected right wing lies can be disseminated through the structure as a whole. Rush fills hat place too. The system works both ways of course. Plenty bubbles up from the web into Fox and Rush. What Fox and Rush do in that case is give the stamp of approval to a certain meme.

Yikes, I should have clarified - the BalloonJuice comment in my LGF profile is not mine! I don't even have a BalloonJuice account; I just link to that particular comment because it's such a piercingly brilliant, accurate quote.

You can either contact Reine at the address she gives on the LGF cookbook site, and then she'll give you my email address...or contact me through my YouTube account if you have one yourself.
