From Forbes comes a small story from back in 2008:

Naturally the election came up in conversation. Trying to be even-handed and polite, the Brits said something diplomatic about McCain’s campaign, expecting Bush to express some warm words of support for the Republican candidate.

Not a chance. “I probably won’t even vote for the guy,” Bush told the group, according to two people present.“I had to endorse him. But I’d have endorsed Obama if they’d asked me.”

Given GWB's stated attempts at humor my suspicion is that if he truly said that then he was trying to be witty/shocking.

A 2008 Bush endorsement of Obama would have been damning the man with faint praise. However, it does suggest that Bush likely voted Obama in the end, since he only endorsed McCain out of obligation, not choice. Why vote for someone you clearly don't like?

Have any of you guys read Audacity of Hope? There's a passage in there where Bush approaches Obama and gives him a (friendly) lecture on how the press that ushers him into power will turn their backs on him. Pretty poignant.

Bush was joking. What rationale could he have provided the media when asked WHY he was endorsing Obama. Other than the bailouts--which Bush and Obama both said was a necessary evil to prevent Great Depression II--what did the two men agree about?

It also would have the thrown the GOP, the party that was so good to Bush, into disarray. There's no recent precedent for an outgoing president endorsing the opposing party's nominee.
