“I still wonder who in Russia”

You state it as if it were a fact. Yet the only link is that the emails were uploaded to [Link: disk.tom.ru…] which is a generic file storage. So correct me if I’m wrong, but there is zero evidence at the moment that anyone in Russia had anything to do with it.

re: #1 Sergey Romanov

Speaking of Russia and climate change, earlier I came across this comment on the ClimateProgress site:

According to the London Review (October issue, 2010), very few Russians believe in Anthropogenic Global Warming, because of a “documentary” which aired on Channel One of their local TV stations which intended to show that Al Gore was in cahoots with the Media in making up the story of human-caused global warming. They realize that global warming is occurring because Russia is heating up even faster than the rest of the planet. But very view attribute it to humans, thanks to the bull story which aired on Channel One.

Is this true?

LOL, well, my boss doesn’t believe it and we argued with him about it, but I really don’t know about about the opinion of average folks. The online Russian coverage of the “Climategate” was pretty bad according to my taste (though probably not worse than the US), can’t say how it was on TV since I don’t watch it.

Yah, here’s the “documentary”. Pretty atrocious. (Use Google translate, the whole text is there).

Here’s another relevant source: Medvedev’s meeting with scienists.

Wait, so even the RUSSIANS blame Al Gore? Why? They have not been programmed to hate him like the American Right has.

I think I need to catch up with Russian attitudes. I kind of dropped out of that when I got back from Kazakhstan in 2002….

“The Russians” don’t hate Gore. AGW deniers who made this dreck of a program do.

But that’s my problem: why would the Russian public believe anything that stupid unless they had been pre-programmed to think Al Gore was a sleaze-bag of the worst sort? As is apparently the case on the American Right.

Excellent post Free!

Rather than quibbling about who in Russia may or may not have been involved, I think it is more important to focus on the outrageous lies of a well manufactured smear that served the purposes of many many vested interests and their pet politicians.

As to the official government stance in Russia, I hate to be blunt, but there it is.

For a while, Russia looked like it might be a “climate winner.” The Russian politicos were very far behind the Russian scientists.

The poeple who run Russia looked at this and saw that the US and China are massive climate losers. We still are. The Russians thought that AGW was to their benefit. It would be hard on Russia, but they saw it as them losing a bishop while America and China lost a queen and two rooks.

It turns out that had they been paying more attention to the science, Russia looses a lot more than a bishop also. After the disastrous harvest this year, the Russians have changed their tune significantly as per diplomatic noises. They are still as opportunistic and amoral as ever and want to make whatever accords reached favor them as much as possible while hurting America and China as much as possible, but they are starting to get that theyare in this too.

So are the Chinese.

Eliza, Gore is not much of a “figure” in Russia. It would be more effective to blame it on, say, Soros (no kidding). Russian public is not very scientifically informed about this issue, and if the central channel puts out such slick agitprop, I guess many are swayed. But I haven’t seen any polls about the issue.

Yes, it is only an assertion, which, lacking any investigation that gets to the truth is all we’ll ever have.
