Wow... opportunistically targeting a bunch of really small programs that are political whistles for the ignorant base to hate, will balance the deficit?

Cantor is scum.

Also listed on that page:

Week One: Cut the New Non-Reformed Welfare Program ($25 Billion Savings)

Week Two: Eliminate Federal Employee Pay Raise ($30 Billion Savings)

Week Three: Reform Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac ($30 Billion Savings)

Week Four: Sell Excess Federal Property ($15 Billion Savings)

Week Five: Prohibit Hiring New IRS Agents to Enforce Health Care Law ($15 Billion Savings)

Week Six: Taxpayer Subsidized Union Activities ($1.2 Billion Savings)

Week Seven: Prohibit Stimulus Funding for Promotional Signage (Tens of Millions)

Week Eight: Prohibit Sleeper Car Subsidies on Amtrak ($1.2 billion Savings)

Week Nine: Bipartisan Proposal to Terminate AEITC ($1.1 billion Savings)

Week Ten: Require Collection of Unpaid Taxes From Federal Employees ($1 billion Savings)

Week Eleven: Reduce Government Employment to 2008 Levels ($35 billion Savings)

Week Twelve: Terminate the TARP Program Prohibiting Any Additional Bailouts

Week Thirteen: Terminate Taxpayer Funding of National Public Radio

And presumably other ideas that weren't the "winners". You might not like any of these items, but your post is dishonest about the number of items that have been offered up.

Merryweather explicitly wrote:

And he's apparently fresh out of ideas, because the next section asks for YOUR input into what should be cut. There's also a list of measures already voted on by the public and brought to the House floor (it's pretty lame stuff like prohibiting the hiring of IRS agents to enforce the health care law)

You simply copy and pasted the very list Merryweather mentions in his write-up, then claim that Merryweather is "dishonest"!

You'll notice I mentioned in my post that list of measures that have already been voted on. And that I state he appears to have run out of ideas - so no, I have not been dishonest.

So far, the estimated savings, including that entire list, are $150 billion. Considering the size of the deficit, that's all they could come up with? Factor in the GOP intention to extend all the Bush tax cuts without paying for them, which would cost around $700 billion, and this is revealed to be an exercise in pandering. This is not a serious attempt to cut spending.

"Eric Cantor is so serious about reducing the deficit, he's dedicated a portion of his website to showing his plans to cut spending. Which so far, are:"

Your post pretty clearly tries to make the three item list seem like that's that. If you listed those three items, why not the rest? Instead they are an afterthought. The way it's presented is misleading.

re: #5 cliffster

Merryweather very, very clearly stated that Cantor's plans were the short list, and the other list was sent in by the public.

That you ignored this doesn't mean Merryweather was being dishonest.

Ahh yes, the wingnut self defense mechanism in the face of evidence that causes cognitive dissonance bolstered by an inability to read.

Why are wingnuts so full on retarded?

And yet people still believe this is a serious political party of fiscal conservatives.

It looks like that page is a gimmick. If you click on the "solutions" tab, it has a couple of trillion in cuts listed besides the whale stuff. And also, 100 nuclear reactors are proposed along with wind. solar, biomass, etc. Wait a minute. Thought that was like garlic to vampires! Don't you have to spend money to build nukes and stuff? So which is it? Holding Rep's feet to the fire to cut spending or spending to cut emissions. Pick one, because I don't think you can have it both ways.
