NJ Pastor says, ‘Thou Shalt Not Use Facebook’
The story is going around this morning about New Jersey Reverend Cedric A. Miller who demanded that 50 married church officials in his congregation either delete their Facebook accounts or leave the church. He has been counseling a number of people who have had problems with infidelity and looking up old flames on Facebook seems to be the culprit.
Of course, this is nothing new. A not-so-good marriage, the chance for excitement with someone new or better yet, someone you actually knew at one time could certainly be a recipe for disaster. However, while I think Rev. Miller has his heart in the right place, his totalitarian approach will probably backfire. After all, if you’ve come to the point where you’re looking outside of your marriage for comfort, Facebook or no Facebook, you’ll probably end up cheating anyway.
Has social media become the latest sinful activity? Maybe the Palin girls should be more mindful how they use social networking and learn how to resist the compulsion to engage in ridiculous internet fights and nasty name-calling. Given their high profile, I think they could use a little counseling on their own.
Maybe we could all take a lesson from that!
When it comes down to internet etiquette, there really isn’t any. It’s part of the beauty and the lure, and, I guess, also the curse.
