Knesset passes J’lem-Golan National Referendum Law (Jerusalem Post)
In the hours and days to come, we will hear much about this “hardline” law that “undermines” Arab-Israeli negotiations and “casts doubt” on Prime Minister Netanyahu’s “willingness and ability” to make peace. And just as clearly, all such criticism is pure and utter nonsense. The law is not only consistent with the law in other democracies, such as the United States (where Article II, section 2, of the U.S. Constitution requires a 2/3 majority of the Senate to ratify ANY treaty), but also places ultimate authority where it should be in a democracy, with the people, by allowing ratification via a referendum if a 2/3 majority is not achieved in the Knesset (a right that U.S. citizens, incidentally, do not have).
