I imagine this is the point were certain members of "The Flock" might like to scramble like hell to detach the "Judeo" part from that meaningless phrase "Judeo-Christian".

To say the least. People who like to delude themselves that the Tradition somehow isn't all about doing right by others, will always be tripped up by the Tradition itself. Those that twist some phrase of obscure commentary into their own perverse view of greed or justifying greed or cruelty or even indifference to the suffering of others, will find that for every pretzel they twist themselves into, there are dozens of clear direct statements calling such notions evil.

To be fair to the Christians out there. Certain parts of the Sermon on the Mount always struck me as very in line with basic Jewish thought on such matters.

I know the people in question don't consider Muslims to be part of the Judeo-Christian tradition even though we also follow an Abrahamic faith that recognizes and respects all the same prophets, but I'll add my $0.02 anyway.

I don't remember which Sufi it was, but a book I read several years ago talked about levels of sadaqa (charity—it looks like the word is the same as the Hebrew tzedakah—a few relevant Quran'ic verses are at the link):

Level 1 - Helping someone by giving them something you have a surplus of, such as money, food, time, etc. This is the most basic level of sadaqa.

Level 2 - Helping someone when you don't have a surplus (i.e. going without something or cutting back in order to help another).

Level 3 - Helping someone when you yourself are in need, even if it requires borrowing from someone else and putting yourself in debt. This is the highest level of sadaqa.

The above must be done solely with the intention of pleasing God. Any of these acts are made a degree better if they are done completely anonymously and/or before the person in need has to ask for help.1

1. Muslims are supposed to responsible for (i.e. care about the well-being and needs of) neighbors for seven doors/homes down on either side of them, therefore they should automatically know when a neighbor is in need.
