Smil is somewhat of a controversial figure. Some people think he trivializes resource issues far too much.

Bill Gates?!? His company is far from being a last player driving global energy consumption upwards in geometric progression. He may well have been a pioneer by introducing a business model which rewards software makers for producing increasingly bloated and mostly redundant products which in turn require hardware upgrades which among other things (notably money from your pocket) draw much more power. If I'm not mistaken my first computer (286) had a 60w power supply, now (20 years later) I'm forced to use 750w power supply cause my 550w ps got fried after I upgraded my video card in order to keep up with latest bloatware...

What I don't understand is why would one of the most successful entrepreneurs evah sing off on his staff pitching a seemingly redundant common-sense book? This sounds like kinder garden material: "Smil points out that the time between the invention of a new energy technology and its widespread use is usually many decades.".

I don't know that much about Smil, but I do think that the pace of change is increasing exponentially rather than incrementally.

One reasonably priced, pretty effective--not even totally effective--way to power an American home through a means not tied to the grid will have enormous global impact.

Given how our politics and economy have regressed, I wonder if the opposite won't be true - that in some other nation a highly effective way to power a home will be invented, and then it will spread (be imported) into the US.

However, we must be aware of Jevon's Paradox here - increasing efficiency is not an answer in the long run because in the end the resource still gets used, just by more users than otherwise.

I wouldn't be surprised if that invention comes from some other nation, but I don't care. That's the upside of globalization.

I also agree that the best solution is to stop burning fossil fuels. I was just saying that in the history of technology, sometimes things happen in increments--but one of those increments can have major effects, it can change the world.

We already have the first generation of solar homes, the first generation of wind farms. The people who really get it, the people who really matter on this issue, know that it's a race to get the these technologies to be efficient, inexpensive, and highly effective. That's what they think about 24/7. They wake up every morning looking at a picture of the patent office.
