Global warming has slowed because of pollution

The latest figures from more than 20 scientific institutions around the world show that global temperatures are higher than ever.

However the gradual rise in temperatures over the last 30 years is slowing slightly. Global warming since the 1970s has been 0.16C (0.3F) but the rise in the last decade was just 0.05C (0.09F), according to the Met Office.

Sceptics claim this as evidence man made global warming is a myth.

But in a new report the Met Office said the reduced rate of warming can be easily explained by a number of factors. And indeed the true rate of warming caused by man made greenhouse gases could be greater than ever…

This will be the fall back as soon the evidence becomes so overt and overwhelming for the skeptics. "We need more pollution of CO2 waste to protect us from the global warming!!" Well for that 'overwhelming evidence' for the skeptics to happen we'll first need to start seeing the oceans boil over, and that still might not be enough, and in that case humanity will have already ceased to exist.

The Telegraph, like so many UK news outlets, does a poor job in explaining why the UK Hadley center numbers are different than the US (either GISS or NCDC) numbers. Put simply, the UK figure assumes the poles are warming at the same rate as the average of the rest of the globe; they do this in part because there are not many surface observation stations inside the arctic circle and antarctic circle. Yet, as pointed out by very numerous observations, the arctic and antarctic are warming faster than anywhere else on Earth.

Also, the headline writers at the Telegraph, like many papers, go for the most dramatic headlines possible.

The Telegraph article does mention that more accurate sea surface temperature readings from buoys may have skewed the ocean temperatures a bit.

Finally, as is all too common, the "2C" figure is offered up as some sort of magical target. A global average rise of 2C is still quite dramatic and will be obvious. Secondly, there is no way by now we will avoid raising greenhouse gases (and change land surfaces) so that we will pass the 2C change. We'd have had to start years ago make emissions cuts, and we're just not doing it and probably won't for some time.
