This is an interesting argument, and just about every psychotherapist on up the clinical ladder has made this point at some time in their lives.
However, there is another observation just as common—that many people have gotten much worse from being in the wrong therapeutic environment. And that’s an observation that is impossible to quantify with any kind of study. The reason is that any attempt to measure this effect is completely unethical and could push a subject over the edge.
