Frogs beat fungi. Every time.

Good news!
Froggies are tough critters.
Even cats leave ‘em alone.

Isolated and endangered populations may die off, but it is very, very hard to cause an extinction through disease. Any survivors will pass on their resistance. Myxomatosis was introduced to kill rabbits in Australia and caused almost total mortality at first, but now the rabbits are back.

I hope the lovely Costa Rican golden toad is still out there.

It was heartbreaking to watch the behind-the-scenes of the Amphibian episode of David Attenborough’s Life In Cold Blood. In it, they spend time on their footage of the severely endangered Panamanian Golden Frog and at the end, they have to take the entire species out of the wild in advance of this fungus that seemed unstoppable. It seemed so hopeless and sad.

Good to hear there’s some hope for the whole class of little guys.

re: #5 Spocomptonite

Yup, watched it and thought it to be very poignant. Unlike the widely spread amphibians up here, the story of that Panamanian frog (and similar species) is sad because it is the loss of habitat that is the final death knell. A disease can be overcome, but loss of one’s home and food supply is overwhelming.
