Woman, 38, brought here as baby, may be deported

TACOMA, Wash. - A federal immigration judge has ordered a 38-year-old woman adopted by an American couple from Mexico when she was 5 months old to be deported back to her native country.

Tara Ammons Cohen, who has been in the Northwest Detention Center in Tacoma since July 8, 2009, has been fighting to stay in America ever since. She fears that being deported to Mexico - where she hasn’t lived since she was an infant, doesn’t speak the language and knows no one - would place her in danger.

“Basically, the judge found her not eligible for withholding of removal (deportation) and found it more likely than not she wouldn’t be persecuted” in Mexico, her attorney, Manuel Rios of Seattle, said Thursday.

Immigration laws do not recognize adoption as a special circumstance in deportations.

That's sad. It happened once to a person I knew. She had no idea she was here illegally, since she had been here since she was a year old. She didn't speak Russian, but one traffic ticket later and she had to go to Moscow. Six months and hell later she made it back home.

This tragic story illustrates the injustice of current immigration law in the US, and the evil of criminalizing something that causes no actual harm to person or property. All this poor woman needs is the imprimatur of the government in order to continue the life she's as she's done almost all her existence. Immigration hawks tend to be folks that decry government's involvement in the lives of people. But they won't extend this principle to people unless they have the government's approval. Even if, as in this case, the government's approval won't change the woman one way or another. She'll be the same person, pretty much indistinguishable from any other American.

They tend to decry government involvement when it effects their lives but if it's someone like this or god forbid they're gay, they're all for it. This is really sad. We need to make it easier for people to find pathways to citizenship not harder. Deporting her would be a terrible thing even if Mexico was more stable. This is her home.
