Virginia GOP delegate wants gays banned from National Guard
Policies restricting gays from serving in the military have been in place since Lt. Enslin was dismissed.
Marshall said the recent repeal “Don’t Ask Don’t Tell” policy — put in place by President Bill Clinton — was simply President Barack Obama’s appeasement of the left wing of the Democratic party.
“The President couldn’t cite one point of military necessity as to why we’re doing this. He has all kind of political payback, but paying people back politically does not defend the country,” Marshall said.
A study by the Pentagon largely found that repealing “Don’t Ask Don’t Tell” wouldn’t harm today’s military, but Marshall said that parts of the study found otherwise.
“If you look at parts of the survey … I think 14 percent of spouses do not want their husbands to reenlist,”he said. “A significant majority of people who are currently in the military would not recommend to their friends or other people to be in the military.”
Marshall said he believes allowing gays to serve openly in the military will prevent people from reenlisting or even joining the armed forces in the first place.
“This is going to precipitate a need for the draft,” he said.
Marshall also said he had the U.S. Constitution on his side and that federal law couldn’t trump state law when it comes to militias. He said he believes his legislation would stand up against federal law.
