‘Anarchists’ launch bomb attacks on two Rome embassies

The first explosion, which occurred at midday (11amGMT) seriously injured a caretaker at the Swiss embassy.

The second, which occurred at around 3pm (2pm GMT), was at the Chilean embassy, also injuring one person.

The Rome prosecutor’s office has opened an investigation on suspicion of “an attack with terrorist aims,” ANSA news agency reported

One of the investigators said that one of the main lines of inquiry was on “anarchist circles of the eco-terrorist movement.”

Another possibility mentioned by investigators is that “the attack was organised by insurgent anarchist groups.”

Anarchists claim responsibility for Rome bombings (Urgent)

Rome - An Italian anarchist group has claimed responsibility for two parcel bombings that targeted the Swiss and Chilean embassies in Rome on Thursday, the Italian news agency Ansa reported.

A statement to that effect was recovered from a small box found next to one of the two embassy workers who were injured in the explosions.

The group in question calls itself the Federazione Anarchica Informale, according to Ansa.

Rome - An Italian anarchist group Thursday claimed responsibility for bombings at the Swiss and Chilean embassies in Rome that left two people injured.

A note containing the purported claim by the Federazione Anarchica Informale (FAI) (Informal Anarchist Federation) was recovered from a small box found near one of the two explosions, news reports said.

'We have again decided to make our voice heard with words and facts. We will destroy the system of dominance. Long live the FAI, long live anarchy,' said the message, according to the ANSA news agency.

The message was inside a small box, similar to those containing peppermint sweets, and was purportedly signed by FAI's 'Lambros Fountas revolutionary cell,' ANSA said.

Fountas, an alleged associate member of the Greek extreme leftist terrorist organizations 'Revolutionary Struggle' and 'Sect of revolutionaries,' was killed in an exchange of fire with police in Greece in March.

Earlier Thursday, Italian Interior Minister Roberto Maronii said investigators believed the attacks in Rome might be the work of anarchists and also mentioned possible links with a November bombing campaign by Greek extremists.
