A Humanist Celebrant is the nonreligious equivalent of a clergyperson. He or she may receive national certification from several organizations, including The Humanist Society, the American Ethical Union, and the Society for Humanistic Judaism; and may conduct marriages, civil unions, memorial services, funerals, and other life ceremonies.

Well, that’s a new one on me. Never heard of such a thing.

Well, that’s a new one on me. Never heard of such a thing.

That’s new for me as well. I have been to a Humanist wedding before. Not sure if involved such an individual conducting the marriage. It did however have some quasi-religious undertones.

Why would atheists want to attend a prayer meeting? I’d prefer to sleep in myself…and lack of religiousness would provide me the perfect excuse.

It gets tiring, being non-religious, and having to keep that under your hat in certain circles, like a spiritual Typhoid Mary. Meanwhile, the religious run the gamut from perfectly normal to shit fucking nuts, but are never in danger of being unaccepted in a public forum.

All the same, as an atheist, I could think of so many things I’d rather do than subject myself to an organized prayer service. Honestly, I’d rather do through my sock drawer. However, I can’t agree more strongly with this:

“We would prefer that a government function such as an inauguration not be entwined with religion,” said Amanda Knief, a Humanist Celebrant and government relations manager for the Secular Coalition for America (SCA).

Ditto, like a million trillion times over.
