Would be interesting to juxtapose that with an opinion poll of the world's population…

Thats exactly what I was thinking. It would also be interesting to see a break down by other internal demographics such as age, gender, race and political inclination/identification.

I'm not surprised. Julian Assange's anti-American bias is obvious. People can tell that he acts with malice toward the US.

And most people don't buy this hooey about how wonderful everything will be when there are no more secrets, because they live in the real world.

Or what kind of media they are regularly been consuming.

My biggest issue with WikiLeaks, aside from Assange being an obvious tool and the blatant malice behind the cable dumps is the complete lack of context or coherence to any of it. It's always felt like just throwing everything you can at the wall and hoping that something will stick and humiliate people. That's unacceptable.

I'm all for whistleblowing if the situation calls for it, like with Abu Ghraib. I'd also like to see greater transparency and less bureaucracy. However, I can't abide the irresponsible and indiscriminate way that WikiLeaks has unfolded.

Hm, sounds like that was one of the things criticized by Cryptome recently, that WikiLeaks does not release dumps indiscriminately anymore. AFAIK, the whole release of the cables so far has been carefully orchestrated together with the newspaper outlets they selected for collaboration.

It seems Wikileaks are damned if they do and damned if they don't. One of the biggest criticisms of the "Collateral Murder" video that they released earlier this year was the excessive editorializing of the content by Wikileaks. Many critics said they should have just released it as is and let people make up their own minds. That's what they have done by and large with the recent leaked cables, and now they are being criticized from the opposite end of the spectrum.

Also, the notion that Wikileaks are just leaking for the sake of leaking is a media meme that doesn't really stand up to scrutiny when you read their published justifications for their actions. There is a clear rationale for what they are doing.

I'd want to see the polling results on some of the tactics used against Wikileaks. Ie, people may disprove of Wikileaks but do they approve of their being denied access to net infrastructure without due process?

It's the net neutrality issues that worry me the most here. Public opinion shouldn't be able to force unpopular political content off the web.

this huge unredacted release of classified diplomatic emails by WikiLeaks has caused tremendous harm, placed lives in jeopardy and damaged American diplomatic efforts around the world I'm outraged by the sheer evil stupidity of Assange's action. People should take note of the en-masse defections of many of his senior staff and volunteers because of what he has done. they've established a new organization called OpenLeaks that promises to behave ethically.

To cite merely one example of the harm he has caused, Assange has placed Morgan Tsvangirai, the brave opposition leader in Zimbabwe, in serious danger by revealing confidential communications between him and local American diplomats, in which Tsvangirai told them of the great effectiveness of the travel and financial sanctions leveled at Mugabe's inner circle of crooks. Mugabe is now looking to use this information to possibly level charges of treason against Tsvangirai, who’s already spent time in Mugabe’s prisons, under the fists of his torturers.

Tsvangirai is NOT collateral damage here. Placing him in harm's way could have been prevented by a simple screening process than any responsible, true journalist would have subjected the material to.
