Major Muslim organization plans South Florida conference -theme ‘Foster Compassionate Communities’
The Islamic Society of North America will hold its first gathering in Fort Lauderdale on Friday through Sunday.
ISNA’s East Zone Conference, taking in members from Florida to Maine, will be at the Broward County Convention Center. About 1,000 people are expected.
The theme for the conference is how Muslims can help foster “compassionate communities” through civic involvement. The twofold goal is to “improve our image” and to make a “positive contribution to society,” according to conference chairman Asad Bayunus, of Miramar.
“Islamophobia is a big issue we’ve been trying to tackle,” said Bayunus, a national ISNA board member. “We want to show we’re normal, law-abiding citizens who want to contribute positively. But we also want to take opportunities to be good neighbors.”
