Arizona Democratic Rep. Gabrielle Giffords was shot on Saturday morning while hosting an event outside a Tucson grocery store, according to local news reports.
National Public Radio reported Saturday that Giffords, who in November narrowly won reelection to a third term, was hosting her first “Congress on Your Corner” event when a gunman ran up and began shooting.

I hate to think it, but a part of me immediately thought "right wing extremists" when I read the story, especially since she's a democrat lawmaker.
If that turns out to actually be true, I wonder how the GOP apologists will try to spin this.

NPR is saying Giffords and at least 6 others are dead. Gunman was tackled by a bystander, and was apparently a young male.

TUCSON, ARIZONA (BNO NEWS) -- U.S. Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords and six others were killed on Saturday when a gunman opened fire at a supermarket in Tucson, Arizona, officials said.
A spokesman for the Pima County Sheriff's Office said Giffords and six others were killed when a gunman opened fire at the scene, where Giffords was hosting her first "Congress on your corner" event of the year. Others were said to be injured.
"My 1st Congress on Your Corner starts now," Giffords tweeted just before the shooting. "Please stop by to let me know what is on your mind or tweet me later."
Giffords, who is considered a member of the Blue Dog Democrats, was first sworn into office in 2007. She was re-elected to a third-term this past November.
