More background, from The Daily Beast:
Glenn Beck's Anti-Semitic Attacks
by Michelle Goldberg

Soros, a billionaire financier and patron of liberal causes, has long been an object of hatred on the right. But Beck went beyond demonizing him; he cast him as the protagonist in an updated Protocols of the Elders of Zion. He described Soros as the most powerful man on earth, the creator of a “shadow government” that manipulates regimes and currencies for its own enrichment. Obama is his “puppet,” Beck says. Soros has even “infiltrated the churches.” He foments social unrest and economic distress so he can bring down governments, all for his own financial gain. “Four times before,” Beck warned. “We’ll be number five.”

That's just sick. Talk about trading one tyranny for another.

Beck might be a little antisemitic or he might not. The problem that he's running into is that all the John Birch Society conspiracies that he's reinventing are deeply rooted in racism and antisemitism. It's almost impossible to remove these elements. He can gloss over them a little bit but it's still pretty obvious.

re: #7 Killgore Trout

He might not be an antisemitic believer as such, like you say, but if he is happy to stoop that low for some ratings, and to be honest it doesn't surprise me, he is a Very Bad Man.

re: #7 Killgore Trout

Yes. Beck is the court clown... a way to front the old ugliness with new, highly polished, presentation. The rich and powerful who use Beck (who is getting rather well off himself) make a lot of money off selling/reselling ideas to people who are willing to be manipulated.

It's so ironic - Beck centers in on Bernays, without admitting (perhaps he is unaware?) that he, Beck, and his show and the network on which he broadcasts (Fox) exploit all that Bernays and his fellows brought to America, that designed the modern "consumerism" American.

11 freetoken  Sun, Jan 16, 2011 8:19:49pm

The following (award winning) made (by Adam Curtis) for BBC documentary contains quite a bit about Bernays (including footage) and his use of Freudian and other psychological theories:

Century of the Self

I wonder if Beck saw this documentary, or if he is just parroting what some Bircher wrote?

Anyway, recommend the documentary. Undoubtedly there is more to the story than what Curtis could include in the couple of hours he had, but I still highly recommend it.

Even though I skipped over it 90% of the time, I still have Fox "News" on my remote. I'm blocking it now and won't put it back until Beck is gone.

Yes, I know they don't care, but if enough people simply don't watch and don't even have it on their remotes, management will notice.

The "man" is walking garbage.

With all due respect for Godwin, I look at the Right today, which is anti-semitic, xenophobic, religiously conservative, anti-democratic, fanatically anti-communist, nationalistic and racist, and it sure looks like fascism to me. I don't throw that term around lightly; I wouldn't have applied it anytime in the previous forty years, but the GOP has moved so far to the Right that literal fascists are now a significant part of its base.

If it weren't for Beck's history, I wouldn't go there. But in context it's pretty bad, even if Beck doesn't mean it.

Woooww. Just when you think Beck can't stoop any lower, this happens.

To cite my earlier comment:

I gotta agree with Ludwig, I worry about where Beck turns next. Beck has a specific paranoid worldview, and we've seen a glimpse of it. We know he reads the old-timer classics of the hard Right (cf. the Dilling incident, Benson etc.).

Since he shuffles through the old lit, he cannot but read the antisemitic items here and there. Some of them even scholarly looking, with citations and whatnot. Since Beck is so proud of being un-PC, since his thought processes are so simplistic and he sees "connections" everywhere, and since such sources would fit perfectly into his worldview, isn't it very probable that he is a closet antisemite by now? At least when it comes to "liberal Jews". If he is, maybe he keeps silent on this topic because he knows he will be a toast. But he can poison the well little by little, like with this classic anti-Soros screed.

Eight of the nine people I fear most are Jews, but don't worry, I'm not an anti-semite!

I know I've heard this logic before somewhere...

I've read a fair bit of Lippman and that's a laughable characterization.
