Detroit mosque bomb suspect rejects Muslim lawyer
If you are a believer in paranoid conspiracy fantasies regarding sharia law and anti-muslim bigotry then rejecting a lawyer over his religion would seem the sane thing to do for you…
A hearing for a California man accused of plotting to set off explosives outside Metro Detroit’s largest mosque was postponed Friday after he rejected his court-appointed attorney for being a Muslim.
Roger Stockham, a 63-year-old Vietnam War veteran with a history of mental illness, was arrested Jan. 24 after Dearborn police got a tip about a man in a bar threatening to blow up a mosque.
Officers say they found Stockham and his car parked outside the Islamic Center of America. The car’s trunk was loaded with powerful fireworks, police said.
The 70,000-square-foot religious complex on Ford Road, which features a 150-foot-tall dome, and 10-story minarets, is among the largest in North America.
Stockham was brought under armed guard to the hearing Friday, where 19th District Court Judge Mark Somers was to determine if Stockham should be bound over for trial on possession of illegal explosives and making a terrorist threat.
