Thank You iceweasel!

Thank you for making it! I'm DYING to talk to you about it but Jimmah and I are off soon. How do you think it's like slavery? (I'll bokmark and be back tomorrow).

Hope everyone has a great night!

Slavery is a system under which people are treated as property and are forced to work.[1] Slaves can be held against their will from the time of their capture, purchase or birth, and deprived of the right to leave, to refuse to work, or to demand compensation. In some historical situations it has been legal for owners to kill slaves.[2]

First, I strong recommend to anyone who hasn't to read Frederick Douglas.

He describes, in his early life, watching his owner's wife's transition from a Christian woman to a slaveowner.

To her, he was a boy, then slowly, she began to think of him as a slave. Someone who was less than human (3/5th's to be exact). Be became an object to her. Something to be used.

Is that not how a rapist sees his victim? SomeTHING that doesn't count as human? SomeTHING to be used?

The above definition isn't as accurate as I'd like and I've run out of time for today.

more later.

OK, I haven't read it yet (Douglass) but just got it. Will soon!

Totally agree. That's one reason I aways liked the slogan "Feminism is the radical notion that women are people".

I think this analogy could apply not only to rape but to anti-choice people and forced pregnancy. Worth noting that has a history in slavery too.

Someone who was less than human (3/5th's to be exact).

The 3/5ths compromise had nothing to do with any person's humanity. It was a method for calculating the number of representatives that the slaveholding states could send to Congress.

yet a consequence (perhaps unintended) was that it defined slaves as less than fully human in the collective conscious of the country.

I had a discussion about this with a mentor of mine a long time ago. She discussed it as an African-American and felt it contributed a lot to the ongoing struggle we face.

It was the slaveholding states that wanted the slaves to be counted as full persons, and the non-slaveholding states that did not want them to be counted at all.

It may have had nothing to do with it explicitly, but doesn't it implicitly?
