Meanwhile, Rep. Gwen Moore of Wisconsin showed yet another reason why it’s important to elect women and people of color — the prospect of a bunch of old white guys standing around talking about black women’s fertility and alleged genocide. After Rep. Paul Brown said (falsely) that clinics target neighborhoods where people of color live and that “more black babies are killed” by Planned Parenthood,
Moore replied, “I know all about black babies. I’ve had three of them. I had the first one at the ripe old age of 18.” She knows something else, too: Republicans’ policies show “utter contempt for poor women and poor children.”

Hey, don’t forget old white women like Michele Bachmann. Gotta give the ladies their due.

Rep. Speier is in mourning for the loss of her child, and dealing with an abortion that was not the outcome she wanted for her pregnancy. It must be a terrible burden - one of my daughter’s friends went through something similar and she still mourns the loss of her first child.

But we must be able to talk about what happens during an abortion. Women deserve that information no matter how painful. And lawmakers need to know the truth about procedures they’re voting on. Describing the procedure is not making a judgment about those who have an abortion.

Well said. There was pain and honesty in Rep. Speier’s response and she is owed respect (unfortunately the video link does not include Smith’s comments): pain because there is real mourning over a real loss; honesty because she called her baby a baby. It took real courage for her to talk about this in front of her colleagues. It’s obvious this was not a cavalier decision for her.
