Thank God! About time. This has been a huge unforced error on his part, and Obama could have saved himself a lot of grief with the GLBT community had this been done 2 years ago.

Unfortunately, you can only make a first impression once, and Obama will never be able to completely undo the damage.

re: #2 celticdragon

well it seems like the repeal of dadt was a great place to start in undoing the damage. this is great news:

After careful consideration, including a review of my recommendation, the President has concluded that given a number of factors, including a documented history of discrimination, classifications based on sexual orientation should be subject to a more heightened standard of scrutiny. The President has also concluded that Section 3 of DOMA, as applied to legally married same-sex couples, fails to meet that standard and is therefore unconstitutional. Given that conclusion, the President has instructed the Department not to defend the statute in such cases. I fully concur with the President’s determination.

I'm not so sure of that. As a member of a pretty forgiving minority group, I would say you can undo any previous bad acts if you start to do the right thing and get results. The president could have let the courts deal with DADT, but he went the legislative right and got a much more solid, bipartisan and noncontroversial result.
