I’ll crunch the numbers this afternoon after running errands. The main problem with your reasoning is that g isn’t constant(it fall’s off linearly below the earth surface). It turns into a integral problem.

The flaw is that the tunnel will be a lot deeper.

Using a circumference of 24900 miles (an approximate average) we get a radius of 3963 miles. Nominal arc length (surface distance) from LA to NY is 2462 miles. We’ve a central angle of 34.6 degrees (rounding). This gives us a chord of 2357 miles and a segment height (distance from center of chord to circumference) of 179.28 miles. That’s a fall of 89.64 miles, or just over 144.26 km.

That is true. I think that anyone doing this problem at a grade school level is probably assuming constant acceleration.

I’ve also checked Galileo’s Theorem concerning time of travel along a chord - it also assumes constant acceleration and (gasp) constant direction of acceleration, which of course is not the case in the hypothetical tunnel, where gravitational pull is always towards the center of the earth.

I have confirmed the ~40 minute transit time, assuming those simplifications, though.

As noted in thread, the fall is 179.28. For some reason I confused that with the chord - halved it so only the “fallling” amount would apply, not the deceleration. eh.

No luck yet finding the book from the 60’s. One of the projects in it, a tidal energy project in the Bay of Fundy, has had some actual development work.

The book might have inspired a similar TV series:
