Gingrich 2012 News Gets Mixed Hill Response
Yesterday Newt announced his exploratory committee but like past years I suspect this is pro forma motion to keep his fans titillated so he can keep the money flowing and remain the big GOP rainmaker that he is. The mixed reviews say it all, while he makes a perfect Merlin for social conservatives, he’ll never be Arthur because he’s unelectable on the national stage. The same holds true of Sarah Palin, they will both tease and titillate, but in the end Newt really wants to be “Southern Buckley” with a slightly more theocratic cut to his jib, and Sarah wants to be this century’s Phyllis Schafly. When are political reporters going to figure that out and stop responding to this pair’s expert chumming of journalistic waters?
he confirmation Tuesday that Newt Gingrich will explore a run for president was greeted by official Washington with a mixture of indifference, excitement and a general prediction that the former Speaker can’t win.
Georgia GOP Reps. Phil Gingrey and Jack Kingston said Gingrich would find healthy support in the Peach State and from the GOP Congressional delegation in which he once served. Rep. Dan Lungren (R-Calif.) also reacted positively to news that Gingrich is set to open a presidential exploratory committee. But Sen. Richard Burr (R-N.C.), while welcoming Gingrich’s presence in the 2012 race, said flatly that the former Speaker would not win the GOP nomination.
