If I was the US government I'd be working really hard to explain to people what it's doing and how much it costs. I suspect many would be very surprised. With luck a few might even say, "Well, damn. I was wrong."

Won't help with the wingnuts though. They're too far gone.

I think the only way to read this poll is to say that people in this nation are getting a lot of incorrect information.

If you consider Iraq and Afghanistan to be 'foreign aid' then 25% isn't all that far off...

I'm sure people are trying to explain it. Problem is, no-one's listening.

Most people can't be bothered to find out what the budget really is, but that doesn't stop them from having an opinion about it.

I'm not so sure that invading a country and going to war qualifies as "aid".

Gee, I wonder what cable news channel that these people might be watching all day long in order to be so grossly misinformed...

The average American also thinks that NASA gets about 25% of the federal budget.

This is about 50 times the real figure.

I have long thought that gross misinformation is the biggest obstacle to worthwhile political dialog in this country. A very large part of the electorate is simply living in a different world, one where foreigners and NASA projects get half their tax money, where half the population is on welfare, where crime is rising at an exponential rate, and where a classroom lecture can covert otherwise straight young people into lifelong homosexuals. Quite a few of our neighbors live in a world of paranoid fantasy. Various opportunists and demagogues have managed to convert this consensus of ignorance into a mass movement. It is a frightening phenomenon.

The Teabagger Guild to Cutting the Budget Deficit

This is how Obama's budget breaks down:

25% Foreign Aid
25% NASA
25% Social Security
25% Defense
25% Medicare
25% Public Employee Pensions
25% Interest on the National Debt

That's 175%. Now all we have to do to balance the budget is to eliminate Foreign Aid, NASA and bust the public employee unions.

Problem solved. Your unborn fetuses can thank us for the debt-free magical fairy land that they will be born into, and oh yes, they will be born, even if it kills their mother.

People really are stupid when it comes to these sort of things. Unfortunately, it's how we get things like the TP.
