Yes, because they have a history, while Maher is an equal opportunity offender when it comes to religion. His point is not so much xenophobic as it is antireligious, although he mangles his facts, exaggerating the extent of "bad" places in Koran. He's also a douche, e.g. on the vaccines issue.

re: #1 Sergey Romanov

Whatever facts he presents are usually drowned out by the amount of douchiness he heaps on top.

He's absolutely right on radical Islamists. But he heaps them in with anyone else who happens to be Muslim, which is untrue and unfair. There are some pretty dark and scary places in the bible, too, but that doesn't mean every Christian follows the Old Testament, or that every religious person is a fundamentalist.

Fundies of any flavor are worthy of scorn and mocking, in my book. They're a fucking boil on the ass of humanity. But that doesn't mean every religious person is a fundie; in fact, fundies are the statistical minority. This is where Mayer can't keep his venom in check.

I have no issue with the politics of Islam. Beyond that I won't go.

As Sergey notes, Maher is provocateur, and nothing more

I don't think Maher overgeneralizes about Muslims as such (although I might have missed something). I think he points out that that majority of the Muslims are not radicals. As for his phrase about the Koran, I also think the Bible is a hate-filled holy book, so sue me. (I think there is more hatred in the Bible than there is in the Koran.) It's just there are times and places for saying things. If this same thing was shouted by some gellerite at an anti-Muslim protest towards an average Muslim, it would be hatred. In this context it's an exaggeration by an uncritical antireligious guy. Context. (But yes, Maher's still a douche.)

There is no perfect symmetry here between the left and the right, considering that it's the right who promote the xenophobia, but if Maher were to say something negative about the Muslims as a whole it would be a matter worthy of condemnation.

But calling religious books names? Not necessarily bigoted, although suspect in the current Islamophobic climate. These books do not necessarily predict the behavior of the religious people. There's usually a layer of commentary/tradition between the direct commandments and the believer, and this layer often softens the hateful parts (though of course sometimes it's otherwise). So whatever he called the Koran, it happened once and it's not the same as saying "Islam sucks". He still should not have said it like that, but that he said it doesn't make him Pamela Geller or David Duke.

Do you buy Wheaties with extra bullshit to fortify yourself every morning, or were you born that way?

Bill Maher Afraid Mohammeds, Islam Taking Over Western World

And just so you know he had a chance to clear it up:

[Link: www.mediaite.com...]

“Muslim people in these [Western] societies are having babies” at a faster clip than non-Muslims.

And when I say Westerner, I mean someone who believes in the values that Western people believe in that a lot of the Muslim world does not. Like separation of church and state. Like equality of the sexes. Like respect for minorities, free elections, free speech, freedom to gather. These things are not just different from cultures that don’t have them. … It’s better. … I would like to keep those values here.
