Good write up. Well done.

Good work. Thanks for posting this. There are bound to be many things we can do besides spending a trillion dollars on new nuke plants.

3 Randall Gross  Tue, Mar 15, 2011 7:33:39am

Great job, but you could add Ocean thermal, and even SPS.

4 Randall Gross  Tue, Mar 15, 2011 7:35:37am

ack, nevermind the OTS comment - thought the Hydro section was about dams, my bad considering the "ring of fire" lead in. Dams break in earthquakes...

5 Randall Gross  Tue, Mar 15, 2011 7:38:36am

Nope, still needs Ocean Thermal... find that deep trench area of cold water and use the temp gradient between surface and cold depths to create power ( They did it with a buoy system at an island way back in the '20's)

Thanks guys.

Indeed I could. I even started on the thought about ocean thermal gradients but forgot to include it. I'm still awake since yesterday and very tired. But it wouldn't be a discussion if I didn't leave something for you guys to bring up. ;)

You are right and good point. I'm just tired.

For those who are lost on the OTEC discussion, here's the wiki page on them, I personally like floating OTEC best since it's more survivable in the event of earthquakes and tidal waves. See the pic of the operating plant in Kona at the link.

It is one thing to generate it ... another to manage it effectively. It all has to be integrated unless you plan on being "off-grid".

9 theheat  Tue, Mar 15, 2011 8:07:46am

I think you did a bangup page and brought forth a lot of things to consider, and got some wheels turning on even more.

re: #8 Bobibutu

This is a very good point. In places like California and Japan upgrading the grid to handle distributed power generation and new technologies will take significant investment. In some other places, such as remote islands, there is no or little infrastructure and smart grids could be implemented right from the start.

re: #10 prononymous

Great page :) Another thing to consider (and I know I've mentioned this previously in other comments - want to draw attention to it!) is Thorium-based technology - from what I've seen so far, it's much safer and cleaner than traditional nuclear reactors. The main problems with it (aside from those that arise with any radioactive material) seem to be what plagues renewables - too little investment and research thus far, meaning very high start-up costs. Here's an interesting snippet from the article, though:

Much development work is still required before the thorium fuel cycle can be commercialised, and the effort required seems unlikely while (or where) abundant uranium is available. In this respect, recent international moves to bring India into the ambit of international trade might result in the country ceasing to persist with the thorium cycle, as it now has ready access to traded uranium and conventional reactor designs.

That was then - perhaps now, with the disaster in Japan, India might think twice before abandoning its Thorium plans.

Yeah, I am curious to see where this thorium reactor technology goes. IMO, we will need a diverse set of power technologies as we wean ourselves off oil and our power usage continues to climb. If I didn't make the point clear above, I think nuclear should be in the mix even if I agree that it might not be appropriate everywhere.

Ps. Anyone that wants the full size version of that volcano + lightning picture above (it makes an incredible wallpaper) can get it from the Astronomy Picture of the Day.

Neat. What sort of power generators were they?
