PZ you're only faithful because you don't love the country enough. Once the stars and stripes and God's infallible word coarse through your veins, you'll realize very quickly that your sex drive can't be harnessed by only one woman. Ergo, you are an amoral, family-hating monster. Now run and tell that homeboy...

I thought this was a brilliant point:

If we strip marriage of the asymmetry of power, as we must if we allow men to marry men and women to marry women, then we also strip away the man and wife, dominant and submissive, owner and owned, master and servant relationship that characterizes the conservative view of marriage. This is what they want to preserve, and this is what they are talking about when people like Gingrich echo those tired phrases about "Judeo-Christian values" and complain that their "civilization is under attack". And it is, when we challenge their right to treat one partner, so-called, as chattel.

i never thought of it this way before, but that's exactly what's going on.

Does this mean scienceblogs is still up for some people? I haven't been able to access the site via AT&T DSL for about 5 days.

Thanks. It's still down from here. Someone on Twitter mentioned that they're down but not saying anything about it. I think the problem must be that some traffic is being incorrectly routed, rather than a problem at the server. Can someone post the ScienceBlogs IP address, so I can try to get there directly?

I've noticed that atheistic or secular types like PZ seem to have downright boring personal lives compared to their fundy brethren. I wonder if the opportunity for adultery actually attracts people to hierarchical religious groups? Has anyone ever seen an objective study? Anecdotal evidence certainly points that way.
I am agnostic and have been most of my adult life. My second marriage, to a woman of similar inclinations, was a model of stability and happiness until her untimely death cut it short. My two daughters both have doctorates, and both are happy and stable in their personal lives.
In contrast, well, I've talked about my first wife at some length here and there is no need to repeat it.
Other examples:
Back when I first divorced wife #1 (aka Jabba the Slutt), I got shanghaid into joining a faddish "divorce adjustment support group." One of the participants was the 50ish ex-wife of a well-known evangelist. She said that her now-ex husband had admitted to extra-marital liaisons with 300 different women during the 35 years they had been married. That is a new popsy about every 5 weeks. Most if not all were various church ladies, usually married themselves.
A long time acquaintance is a religious fanatic who home-schooled his 3 children. They are all in their 20s now. One of the boys is in prison, another is on parole and the girl is on welfare with her 3 children, all born out of wedlock and with different fathers.
