Whether or not the perception is valid is not really at issue and therefore, not open to debate. If either of our two constituencies perceives that they are not welcome in our administration building and this translates to a belief that their needs will not be heard or met by this department, then it presents a barrier to achieving our mission.

Lovely. Let’s start:

“Hey, there’s a picture of an interracial couple there. I feel alienated.”

“Hey, isn’t that a picture of a COMMIE? I feel alienated.”

“Those pictures of working women are against my religious beliefs. I feel alienated.”

The steamroller effect is in full gear, apparently. What a load of beck crap.

“LePage spokesman Dan Demeritt says the mural and the conference room names are not in keeping with the department’s pro-business goals and some business owners complained.”
No need to bring up any names, after all a corporation is a person too, ya know.
What a tidy slab of shit statement. Petty indeed.

God forbid, we wouldn’t want anyone to think the Department of Labor actually cares about laborers, would we? They ought to make the change complete and rename it the Department of Corporations.

Now that I’ve had some time to think about it, I have some handy renaming ideas, since soothing the offended feelies of business peeps seems to be important:

The Triangle Shirtwaist Conference Room

The Matewan Garden

The Exxon Valdez Room

The Deepwater Horizon Wing

I’m sure we can come up with more ideas!

re: #3 aagcobb

For every special interest is entitled to justice, but not one is entitled to a vote in Congress, to a voice on the bench, or to representation in any public office. The Constitution guarantees protection to property, and we must make that promise good. But it does not give the right of suffrage to any corporation.

The true friend of property, the true conservative , is he who insists that property shall be the servant and not the master of the commonwealth; who insists that the creature of man’s making shall be the servant and not the master of the man who made it. The citizens of the United States must effectively control the mighty commercial forces which they have called into being.

Theodore Roosevelt— The New Nationalism

It’s amazing how far the conservative movement has fallen in the hundred years since TR spoke these words.

Hey, if the Taliban could blow up the Bamiyan Buddhas, why can’t the Tea Party tear down murals representing labor? Seems pretty obvious to me: just destroy the imagery that represents or matters to the people you hate. Ergo, mobs tear down statues of tyrants, and the state government erases paintings of workers. Right.

What would happen if he plastered the halls in corporate logos and people complained?

8 Our Precious Bodily Fluids  Wed, Mar 23, 2011 1:00:14pm

This is the age in which the sole purpose of government is perceived to be ensuring maximum corporate profitability and minimum corporate accountability. Nothing more, nothing less. People run for office in order to take care of #1. You ain’t even #2.

That notorious far-left rabble-rouser Dwight Eisenhower once said:

“Should any political party attempt to abolish social security, unemployment insurance, and eliminate labor laws and farm programs, you would not hear of that party again in our political history. There is a tiny splinter group, of course, that believes you can do these things. Among them are H. L. Hunt (you possibly know his background), a few other Texas oil millionaires, and an occasional politician or business man from other areas. Their number is negligible and they are stupid.”

Of course, nobody paid attention to him when he was warning about some other stuff, too.

Their number is negligible and they are stupid

Wow.

Can you imagine any of the Presidents who followed him making this kind of public statement?

The cynic in me says it’s because their numbers aren’t negligible any more, and holy crap, can you imagine the explosion of “elitist intellectual” commentary that would ensue?

Sigh.
