Reading the article further, it appears clear that the quislings of Europe fully intend to recognize a Palestinian state in September via the UN General Assembly, and that they have informed the PA of their intention. Should that occur, and inasmuch as such action would, in my view, violate UNSC Resolution 242 — which, by its terms, is addressed to “all Member States” of the United Nations — Israel should do whatever its elected leaders believe is required in order to defend its territory and its people.

The UN would indeed be overriding a binding treaty. That would pretty much create the unforeseen (by the UN, foreseen by everyone else) consequence of keeping any negotiations from being binding, the world over—as one party simply needs to get UN Facebook support to override the treaty.

This kind of has the feel of Germany opening up a third front in WWII. That is, it’s okay when the UN abrogates a treaty involving Israel, but what happens when it occurs to France, or the UK, or the US? How long before Kim tests the 49th parallel? What happens when the votes of the Security Council are regularly overridden by the General Assembly?

Comparably, there is no diplomatic chaos now. Diplomatic chaos will come after September.

This scenario creates a conundrum that threatens to do much greater harm to international diplomacy than the WikiLeaks brou-ha-ha could ever do.

It will be interesting to see whether the Europeans’ desire to diplomatically fellate the leaders of the Arab and Muslim nations in order to secure access to oil leads them to do an end run around the Security Council’s authority and, in so doing, undermine the basic premise of the UN’s organizational structure, namely that the ultimate responsibility for world security rests in the hands of the great powers, sitting in the Security Council. Should the Europeans go that route, they could be signing the UN’s death warrant, by turning the entire UN organization into the farce that the UNHRC already is.

Yeah, it would be just terrible if the UN created its own demise. Belated Happy Purim to you.
