In a way this avoids a waste of time. California (imo) simply will not pass a 5 year extension of the tax increases. A shorter extension might have a shot. But Californians like most people vote their own pocketbook. So The legislature really can only cut much deeper, given the inability to raise revenues.

The 72-year-old Democrat was forced to concede defeat this week in his quest for a June special election on taxes, calling off talks with Republican lawmakers whose votes he needed to get the measure on the ballot.
