In the midterm elections what helped the GOP tremendously was a good turnout of older people and a smaller turnout of younger people (who turned out in droves for the 2008 election.)

In 2012 there will be more younger people voting again, which will work against the GOP both in the Presidential race but also in the Congressional races.

It's still possible for Obama to lose, but right now he does look like the GOP is shooting itself in the foot. Yet it is still possible for the GOP to find a knight in shining armor - they've got until next spring to find a body that can appeal to a broader audience.

I think it was simply a protest vote against the way the President was handling the economy, in that he wasn't handling the economy.

However, the Tea Party completely misinterpreted the results, as we knew they would. Basically, they lost (set in motion the upcoming loss), the day after the election. It's possible that the houses of Congress will be split, not a bad thing. But forget any more electoral gains.

It's painfully clear there is not a single potential GOP candidate right now that has the ability, intelligence and charisma to competently lead the United States of America.

The people right now getting most of the attention are the freakshow(s). Trump, Cain, Newt, Palin, and Bachmann are not serious candidates. In one way or another, they are promoting themselves. If any of them actually do run and attempt to make their way through the primaries, they will run out of money as the more establishment candidates emerge and the party throws their support behind them. In the meantime, the freakshows will write books and/or get Fox "News" contributor gigs, particularly the latter, because Fox "News" is where right wingers go to die after they lose elections

Pawlenty and Huckabee, while they are now pandering to the far right, will, I think tack a little more moderate in an attempt to get votes from the real front runner and only serious GOP candidate, Mitt Romney. At best, right wingers mistrust Romney, but they will come to realize that he is their best chance to win the White House against Obama. And if the economy sours again, or if Lybia turns into a quagmire, then he has a better than average chance of winning, I think.

The GOP is a hard right party right now, but there are still enough sensible people inside with the power to put the nutjobs in time out. They may be creepy, but they aren't stupid.

It's going to be Mitt & Michele for pres. and VP. She'll play Sarah Palin to his boring tedium, and stoke up the masses. They'll be the Big White Teeth couple. It will be terrifying.

Unfortunately, I think too many of you grossly underestimate how pervasive the cult propaganda really is, and how much of an influence it has on the national dialogue.

I don't think the old truths of being 'too extreme' to win a general election hold any more. There is no such thing as too extreme to the modern American Conservative. But the worst part is, more and more people are starting to believe that the truth lies somewhere between complete, raving insanity and pragmatic, centre-right attitudes. That's the effect of massive scale, unrelenting marketing/propaganda.
