I just cleaned up some of my inevitable typos. If you haven't seen it yet, you will probably like my last post, which is in a similar vein, but much more "Ludwig" and was dedicated with "love" to address these sorts of cretins directly.

And seriously, good to see you online at the same time Ice!

i KNOW! The time difference is killing me, I never get to see you any more. Other people too like Gus and Stanley Sea-- it's hard to be online at the same times.
What are you up to lately? Grading?

Replying to you on two threads at the moment - but actually doing some very cool work with optics. Busy busy busy and fortunately no students this semester so I can focus...

It simply takes more than one slogan to present the case. It is maddening. If people would only think and look at the evidence, there would be no argument and there would be no debate. But they don't.

And that's why the human race can't have nice things :(

On that note, though I know it's a dead thread, I'd love to see you smack down this driveling idiocy so it's not the last thing stinking up the comments. I'd do it myself, but I'm in too bad a mood to use anything other than profanity :P

Sometimes it is quite hard to avoid the need for profanity when dealing with arrogant, ignorant, mean spirited morons.

Great work, needs punchier title, para 5: sewing sh/= "sowing" , the other thing not as clear as it could be: how much these people are injecting their wishful thinking into what God might or might not do - that's pretty presumptuous and manipulative - e.g. my version of god trumps your reality.

12 Randall Gross  Thu, Apr 7, 2011 6:50:28am

hrmm... not even "your reality" but "consensual reality", which is even worse. Again, good work here.

And new title!

And your point about the arrogance to say what God will or will not do is particularly spectacular for a supposed believer.

That is my whole point about don't kid yourself about judgement coming.

What i really liked about this, is that you framed it within a context that a religious person can identify with. Being an atheist, i would not be able to pull that off quite as well, because my response would be "What a dumb ass, religious kook". Which is a response that has never been very successful in persuading anyone.

Thank you. Due to many, many hours of Miss S. telling me over and over that I can't just call stupid people stupid directly, I have tried to be a more debating style Ludwig again. It goes in cycles for me.

As to the believer Atheist angle, what upsets me as someone who is actually pretty religious, is that these folks are banging the books without ever having read or understood them and utterly perverting what they say. It is an offence on every level from the purely intellectual and the purely scientific to the simple understanding of what is even said in scripture.

I finally found the "landlord/tenant" analogy I was looking for, and think it serves as a perfect smackdown for the "God will take care of us even if we trash the Earth" dimbulbs:

A wealthy builder builds two homes. He puts all he has in them as he knows that a family will stay in each. He chooses as wisely as he can to find the best occupants. He leaves them with the request that they treat their home well as respect to him and his work, and that he will return and show them kindness for doing it. One family neglects that home and ruins it inside and out. They leave it trashed, smelling and torn down. The necessities like heat, electric and water not even working properly. In contrast, the other home is well maintained. It is clean and orderly. It is loved. This family looks forward to the day its owner comes back to check on it. They want him to see it just as it was left to them. The day comes when the owner does return. To the family that respected his words, he leaves the home for good to them. They are truly blessed. But for the other, this owner has no remorse, for he kicks them out, evicting them. What does this illustration mean to us you may ask? Now you may or may not believe that an almighty God exists; I happen to believe so. And he is the wealthy builder in my story. We are the tenants. Which tenant shall we be then?

Someone should ask the anti-environment "believers" that question.

Yeah... Jewish Law is even more brutal on these points. This is a great argument though - provided you don't believe that you will never need the house because you are going to be raptured.

Excellent, Ludwig.

I can see not believing in AGW-I think it's an incorrect viewpoint, but I can understand it.

I can see where some people believe God will save them from problems. Once again, I think it is demonstrably untrue, but I can understand it.

Where I'm running into trouble here is the belief that we will be saved from ourselves in this one area, while we still need to eat so we won't starve, go to the doctor when we are ill, and lock the doors to our houses, among other things. Where is their faith in all these other areas? How about 'rendering unto Caesar' and paying those taxes joyfully, knowing that I would be provided for by a supreme being?

Thank you. In the context of seeing how they do not believe, I too can see it as a carefully played bit of propaganda that was bought by a large, uneducated sector of America that disdains critical thinking and is in general very frightened and wants simple answers. However, that to me is more like diagnosing a mental condition than it is actually emphasizing with it.

Everything you point out is just the delusions of spoiled and silly children in adult bodies. Consistent thought is not the point. They can not imagine the coming droughts and famines in America because for the most part they have never been hungry. They can not imagine hardship in America of the sort that so much of the rest of the world faces because either they have no concept of it, or they have no ability to accept it could happen here.

They can not imagine that Jesus would abandon them to a non-white America either or that the technological world and its complications would render them and their woeful lack of education outdated. It is all much more comfortable to point easy blaming fingers on others and never see how they are the exploited dupes of those who could not care if they lived or died.
