Maryland Same-Sex Marriage Act Sent Back to Committee
Maryland will not be joining the five other states that grant same-sex marriage licenses, at least not during this state senate session.
The Civil Marriage Protection Act, a piece of legislation that would have allowed same-sex couples equal marriage rights, was sent back to committee in Annapolis after initially looking like it would be signed into law.
According to The New York Times, The Maryland House of Delegates elected to delay voting on the measure in March and with the end of the legislative year approaching on April 11, the chances of it being reintroduced for debate are slim.
Though Governor Martin O’Malley had been quoted as saying he would sign the bill if the Senate passed it, pressure from constituents made many original proponents of the measure change their position.
