Sadly, those comments are no surprise. Since tolerance and understanding of homosexuality is up and it's getting harder to target them, transgendered individuals are a popular new target. Since the vast majority of the public has a very limited view of sex and gender, along with being pretty uninformed on transgender-related topic, it is often easy to get people worked up with lies and confusion on the issue.

“My brother dressed up as a woman for Halloween… but he never became a homosexual. But if he became a homosexual, he couldn’t even be in our family, transgender, whatever.”

- “You’re looking at transgender teachers and you’re looking at an agenda that is rolling out into the school systems that seeks to affirm transgenderism as normal and positive. Children will be encouraged to cross dress.”

- “Children will then have to defend their birth femininity, or masculinity and they will be discriminated against if they attempt to be the boy or the girl they were born to be.”

- “If you vote yes on this bill, it will be abundantly clear to everyone of your constituents, that you do not care about the children of Maryland and you do not care about the children — our youngest most vulnerable and defenseless citizens who also have rights.”

Am I the only one who thinks these people would be much happier if they came to grips with the idea that human sexual 'orientation' (and I really hate that word is a spectrum rather than a purely binary condition?

Not trying to troll the religoious among us, but as an atheist human I find it quite fascinating to compare human behavior (including human sexual behavior) with that of chimpanzees, gorillas, and bonobos. I'm very curious why we seem to be alone in our apprehension of all things sex-related.

Well, what you say is true. In this case, however, the issue is less about sexual orientation and more about gender identity (Well, and the confusion most people have between them). I mean, I suppose it all falls into a broad category of people being uncomfortable with anything that challenges the black and white, totally heterosexual male and female model, but one is about who you are attracted to and the other is about the core of one's own identity.

They started allowing cross-dressing at my school when I was in fifth grade. Only for girls, though; we were finally allowed to wear pants. Later, they could even be jeans.

Hmm, let's see.

Current fashions in clothing are based on completely arbitrary traditions. Women have variously worn pants, dresses, skirts, wraps and other coverings, limited only by the desire to support/hide/warm certain body parts without restricting activities and ease ridding the body of wastes. Men have variously worn pants, frocks, kilts, togas and other coverings, limited only by the desire to support/hide/warm certain body parts, etc..

What they're really afraid of is gender confusion, probably because it reflects badly on them and suggests their god makes mistakes.

It also suggests they still view women as less than men.

This is so stupid to think that the idea of protecting transgendered people will lead to encouraged to cross-dress and shit if someone wants to cross-dress, that's their right. These people are morons.

Gender confusion also leads to confusion when dealing with roles based on gender, and that is not a place the GOP or other homophobes feel happy. Messes up their so-con agenda.
